Are dance-geared movies a trend that's here to stay? This is a question that was recently bought to my attention so I thought I'll bring this discussion to the blog.
The movie-going audience sure loves a good dance film. R&B singer Cassie made her film debut in "Step Up 2: The Streets" which so far grossed $26,267,000 in box office receipts.
"Save The Last Dance", which had a fresh-face Kerry Washington in its cast, pulled in $91,038,276 back in 2001.
Today known faces are added to this new trend. Chris Brown's star power and the sass of Meagan Good helped "Stomp The Yard" bring in $61,356,221 last year.
Truth be told, Hollywood at one point expanded upon the dance-gear films. (Rent or go see "You Got Served", "Roll Bounce", "Shall We Dance", "Take The Lead", "Drumline", "ATL", "How She Moves", and many more for proof.)
According to this list, "Saturday Night Fever", "Flashdance", and "Save the Last Dance" are the top three dance films of all-time.
The cultural signficance of "Flashdance" can be seen in Jennifer Lopez's "I'm Glad" music video.
So I suppose dance-geared films are here to stay. Thoughts?
