TREY SONGZ ON "IN YA PHONE" LEAK
Trey Songz sat down with SOHH: Soulful Blog to discuss his new haircut and his new song, "In Ya Phone" that leaked online last week. I like the response Trey gave about his hair and the song leak. Check it out...
In a recent interview with "Essence" magazine, Trey talked briefly about the production of his upcoming album. Trey said he wants "... to experiment with world music, soul, R&B, and a little bit of pop, while still keeping the essence of what I do." (Thanks Visa!)
Trey also touched upon on what's missing in mainstream music. There is a lot of creativity and a lot of music of substance that doesn't get heard. I'd say it's more about what's missing from mainstream music. [The industry] wants a record that will stay in people's heads. If a song like Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" came out today, it would never get played. Everything has its place. R&B [is mostly] about love. Rappers talk about clubs. So you're either loving, having sex or in the club. I mean, Lil Wayne speaks about Al Sharpton on his new album but what's the single? "Lollipop." I dig people that try to get [a message] out. But everyone has to compromise a little piece of creativity to get a hit.
Wow! Hate to say but Trey is right about some type of message. What Trey said made me miss Lauryn Hill from her memorable "Miseducation" days. Do you feel the top 40 songs doesn't reflect a little bit of creativity/message??

As much as i like trey songz' last album and his singles, its killin me to admit it but this "In Ya Phone" song sucks. It was VERY cheesy. And i wanna like it, but i just can't cuz its pretty bad. C'mon Trey i know u can do better than that. He's one of those artists who doesn't need to turn to those "cute, light-hearted, pop songs" because he's famous for his soulfullness. Even "Missin You" has a pop beat cuz its produced by Stargate, but the lyrical content is pretty deep.
As for "In Ya Phone", i'm not excited.
