BROADWAY DEBUT
"Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" had its Broadway opening night last night in New York City. The play's stars James Earl Jones, Boris Kodjoe, Terrence Howard, Anika Noni Rose, Debbie Allen, and Phylicia Rashad were all in attendance.
The cast recently sat down with Vanity Fair to express their thoughts on turning Tennessee Williams' Pulitzer Prize-winning story to a Broadway play:
My favorite line is: ‘Mendacity is a system that we live in,’ ” says Terrence Howard, who is making his Broadway debut. Howard, who earned an Academy Award nomination as best actor for Hustle and Flow, plays the tormented Brick—a major challenge, he admits. “He’s got so many things he’s hiding from,” Howard says. As Maggie, Anika Noni Rose brings the requisite va-va-voom factor to the role of Brick’s desperate, frustrated wife—the proverbial cat on a hot tin roof. “This play is so intense,” says Rose, who won a Tony Award for her performance in Caroline, or Change. “It’s like a hurricane stuck in a room.
